Running Treadmill

A running treadmill is a good solution when the weather conditions are not favorable for running outside, or you are constrained for time, or for any other reason can't enjoy your normal outdoor run. They provide many of the same benefits as going running outside, but there are a few differences that should be noted. These differences between treadmill running and running outdoors include:
  • Running Treadmills offer a smooth surface, whereas outdoors the runnning surface can vary. If you are transitioning from running on a treadmill to running outside, it is important to watch where you are placing your feet and to start slowly as your muscles may not be used to the uneven surfaces.

  • When running outdoors a runner will have a slight forward lean, while a treadmill runner should remain upright. This is due to the outdoor runner propelling themselves forward against the ground versus the treadmill propelling itself against the runner and the runner trying to stay in one spot. In order to simulate the body mechanics of outdoor running on a treadmill, most experts recommend setting the treadmill incline between 1 and 3 degrees.

  • Indoor treadmill runners will be able to maintain a higher speed for longer. This is something to note if you are transitioning from indoors to outdoors. Running on a treadmill is considered to be easier than running outdoors. You should expect that you won't be able to run as far as your treadmill said, or as fast.
  • Treadmill running helps set a cadence and maintain it. Training on a treadmill will allow your body to get used to a certain cadence, and teach it not to vary your speed much as the belt will turn at a set speed, forcing you to also run at a set speed.
